A horrible week ...

Hi all,

Had a horrible week - with a really crazy Friday … was completely done by Friday evening …

on Thursday, I worked on our Business Strategy assignment first (due on Friday), then on our stock picking competition with Fahad (don’t ask me why I signed up for that?!?), then a bit studying for EPP(Economics & Public Policy, aka Macroeconomics), then again Strategy till they threw us out at uni at 10.30pm, went home and done some more studying till 1.30am. Got up early and done even more studying (& still felt not well prepared) – then EPP mid-term exam on Friday and after that (you guessed right) Strategy again … started a new document from scratch and pulled everything the team members kept sending me together … finished right in time 3.55 when the assignment was due at 4pm.

Even tough I usually stay calm even when under pressure … this was really though (finally not the best we/I ever done but at least something I could live with) … I was so busy, I not even recognized that I forgot to eat since breakfast!

Nadja's Birthday

Last week Friday – I know long ago – I was invited at Nadja’s place to celebrate her birthday. A couple of friends were partying in a beautiful CBD apartment. We had a really great evening … as a birthday present I will invite her for Topfenpalatschinken next week at my place …

Update

Hi everyone,

it's me ... again ... ;)

what happened in the last time?
  • my notebook's hard-drive crashed last week ... at least, it is still under warranty ... got my computer in service for the last couple of days ... and now it takes me forever as it seems to get back to the pre-crash status ... also, I had good luck and hardly lost any data! (or maybe nothing at all as my colleague Raj might be able to retrieve the rest of the data as well)
  • Without a computer I'm an absolute nothing here at the MBA ... :(
  • yesterday we were notified about our exchange program ... I'm going to Rotterdam! Yes! Looking forward to that a lot! :) Seems, my class is mainly going to be scattered around Europe and in the Big Apple ...
  • Regarding internship - no news ... except of having an interview next Thursday with seek.com, Australia's leading job searching portal
  • had my first mid-term exam yesterday - Managing Processes (or Operations Mgmt) ... went well I believe ... have a good feeling ...
  • started with my 5th subject today - Brand Management ... very interesting, good lecturer ... like it heaps! :)
  • had Karen and Davide over for dinner tonight ... made a good Austrian-Australian dinner, Topfennockerl and my favorite Australian desert, a pav. Yumm ...
Well, guess that's all for now ... will work a bit further on my computer ;)

Phillip Island

As you all know my friend Nadia from Paris is/was here in Australia and after her brother wedding and a couple of days in Sydney she came back and stayed the last couple of days with me. On Thursday I finally shuffled a couple of appointments and joined her for a day trip to Phillip Island, a must-see in Melbourne. It was very good to flee from my odd day-to-day business of studying, studying, and – you guessed right – studying. Phillip Island is known for its large Little Penguin colonies. These are the worlds smallest penguins. And, something I didn’t know before that tour, Phillip Island is the second biggest tourist attraction in Australia after the Ayers Rock!

Tasmanian Devil

We visited a wildlife park first, saw some wombats, roos, tasmanian devils, and koalas. Then we went on a lovely beach, usually the best surf beach on Phillip Island but the surf was way too big, so we “just” enjoyed this lovely natural spectacle and a good walk on the beach … Then we went to Seal Rock on the west coast of the island. Seals are supposed to be scattered all over that rock, in the water, just everywhere … well, non of us saw a single seal – probably they were hiding ;)

Phillip Island

And finally, we arrived at Penguin Parade. They built a stadium there for all the tourists to easy watch the penguins coming back from their daily food hunt. They come in groups of 10-15 surfing on the beach on a wave … usually suddenly one panics and all are running back to the sea … this happens for about 3 times and then they make their way across the beach (that’s the most dangerous part of their day). We watched them for a while in the freezing cold stadium and then we made our way along the wooden board walk where you can see them really close and finding their partner at their burrow. They are really cute and way smaller than you’d expect.

We had a great day!

Wine Appreciation @ Jwow

Now we are finally coming to the real, important stuff to learn in a MBA program …

Last Tuesday we were in a nice, little wine bar (Jwow) downtown Melbourne to learn about “Entertaining for business or for pleasure. Which wines to choose?” Roz, the manager of JWow, was leading through an evening of enjoyable wine tasting but also passed on her knowledge about how to open a champagne or wine bottle in style and what to look for in different wines. How to find out which wine to order at a business dinner or which wine to chose to complement certain food.

All together, very interesting, had a lot of fun – an enjoyable evening!
