Day 35 – 37 (20. – 22.2.2013): Kayaking the Abel Tasman

Day 2: Onetahuti to Anchorage
This is the heart of the park – and you can feel by the
amount of other kayakers and other boots you see – in comparison on day one we
hardly met anybody.
In the morning a lot of kayaks where dropped on the beach –
just gives an indication about the sheer numbers of ppl who will be kayaking
this part of the park today.
I started the day with watching the sunrise – actually the
cicadas woke me up – wow, they are so loud (and supposedly start their noise
only above a certain temperature of ca. 17°C).
We started our kayak with a “stroll” around Tonga Island
which is known to be seal nursery. Seal babies are really cute J
Day one is supposed to be longest to kayak, so day two felt
rather easy – again awesome lush rainforest, beaches, lagoons, wild life …

Talking about beaches – Abel Tasman NP has 52 beaches at
high tide, however at low tide it’s more than 100! This coast has one of the
biggest changes in tide in the world – up to 5m which makes low tide seem to be
extremely wide outside.
Tonight we camped in Anchorage, a bigger and much busier
camp ground.
As the German girl only went for a two-day trip, Callum’s
double kayak got exchanged to a single kayak by a water taxi.
